AP Exam Preparation
AP exams (Advanced Placement exams) are college level tests administered by the College Board. While students are not required to complete AP courses prior to taking the exam, students tend to perform better on the exams when they take the corresponding course. Most high schools offer a selection of AP courses.

Who Should Take AP Exams?
All students in grades 10, 11 & 12 who are academically ready are recommended to take AP exams, especially if there are subjects that they are strong in. A good indicator of whether a student is ready to take an AP exam is whether they took the PSAT 10, PSAT/NMSQT, or SAT. The online score report has a section for AP Potential, which indicates which AP courses your student is best suited for based on their test performance.
AP World History and AP European History are AP courses offered to students in grade 10, so if your student previously took the PSAT 8/9, their score report will indicate whether they would potentially do well in those courses.
It helps to get a second opinion from educators who work closely with your student academically, so consider asking your child’s tutor, guidance counselor, or tutor whether they think your student is ready for AP courses.
Why Take AP Exams?
AP exams are not a college admissions requirement, however when students sit for an AP exam and earn a passing grade, they can earn college credit. This can help students save time and money during their post-secondary studies, which is why preparing for these exams with a trusted test prep coach is a worthwhile investment.
About AP scores
The AP Exams follow a score table out of 5 that helps determine whether a student is qualified to be receiving a college credit. These score distributions are based on research conducted by the AP program based on the correlation between the performance of AP students and with those of college students. Most post-secondary institutions require a score of 3 or more for a student to receive a college credit, but this requirement can vary based on each school and program, so be sure to check your preferred school’s website in advance.
