My family is like many of the families we support at Tutor Doctor. I’m the mother of two high schoolers so I understand the challenges of managing a career, shuttling kids to and from sports and music activities, planning family meals together, and doing homework – all while trying to raise my kids to be well-rounded with strong characters and positive self-identities. It’s a lot. And I drop the ball sometimes.

Having come from nearly 20 years in Corporate leadership roles, hiring and developing teams, I saw the opportunity with Tutor Doctor in Arizona as a way to make a personalized and lasting impact during the formidable years in our children’s lives, and taking some of the stress, burden and guilt off of parents’ shoulders. Mentors served as beacons of guidance and encouragement in my academic and professional career so I believe in mirroring that model between our Academic Coaches and students at Tutor Doctor.

This is not specific to Arizona’s education system, but there are 3 core areas I see our children lacking, and intentionally want my team of tutors and our staff to support through our one-to-one mentorship and academic support:

  • Setting and achieving goals. Without knowing how to do this intentionally and realistically, it leads to a lack of motivation or belief in a person’s significance or autonomy.
  • Self-advocacy. When a child needs help or believes an error was made by someone in a position of authority – such as a teacher miscalculating a grade on a test – they need to learn when and how to speak up for themselves and ask for clarification.
  • Executive Functioning. Time Management and Organization are severely lacking! Schools may hand out planners and post assignments and due dates on student portals, but without showing kids how to use these tools – and holding them accountable to it – they do not develop the skills they need to be successful in college or the workplace.

If we help our students become just 1% better in each tutoring meeting, we can create momentum, improve confidence, and spark joy for their futures!

My mission is clear, although not easy: Help today’s students become tomorrow’s successful adults.
